Dry scalp or dandruff? How to tell, and why it matters
- They are opposite problems. Dry scalp makes small, fine, white flakes with skin that feels tight. Dandruff makes larger, oilier flakes, often with itch and redness.
- Treating the wrong one makes it worse. Piling oils onto dandruff can feed it. Using a strong anti dandruff shampoo on a dry scalp strips it further.
- You can have both at once. It is common, which is part of why guessing at the shampoo aisle so often fails.
- A scan settles it. AI scalp analysis looks at oil levels, flaking and the skin around each follicle, so the approach is matched rather than guessed.
- Start with a look, not a purchase. The consultation is complimentary.
They look similar in the mirror, but a dry scalp and dandruff are different problems with different fixes. Treating the wrong one is why so many people cycle through shampoos that never quite work.
How to tell the difference
The quickest tells are the flakes and the feel. Dry scalp tends to produce small, fine, white flakes, with skin that feels tight and generally dry across your body, not just your head. Dandruff usually produces larger, oilier flakes that can look yellowish, often with a scalp that feels oily rather than tight, and a more persistent itch.
Dandruff is linked to a common yeast that lives on everyone's skin and to oil production, which is why it can flare with stress, weather and hormones. A genuinely dry scalp is about a lack of moisture and barrier support. Same snow on your shoulders, very different cause.
Let us actually look
A scalp scan shows what is happening at skin level, so you stop guessing and start treating the right thing. The consultation is complimentary.
Book a complimentary consultationWhy the distinction changes the fix
If you treat dandruff as dryness, you pile on oils and heavy conditioners that can feed the problem. If you treat a dry, sensitive scalp with strong anti dandruff actives, you can strip it further and make the tightness and flaking worse. Getting the category right is most of the solution.
What a scalp scan shows
Our AI scalp analysis looks at the skin surface, oil levels, flaking and the condition around each follicle. That tells us whether you are dealing with dryness, dandruff, a mix, or something that needs a different approach, and it means any advice you get is based on what is actually there rather than a guess.
