Hair shedding after a GLP-1 weight loss medication
- Rapid weight loss reads as a stress. The body redirects energy to essential functions and pushes more hairs into the resting phase.
- The shed is delayed. Resting hairs sit for around two to three months before they fall, which is why the timing feels disconnected from the cause.
- It is usually temporary. The follicles are resting rather than lost, and new growth is often already on its way underneath.
- Nutrition is worth checking. Eating much less often means less protein and fewer micronutrients. Iron and protein are worth reviewing with your GP.
- A scan tells you which it is. It distinguishes temporary shedding from pattern loss underneath. The consultation is complimentary.
Noticed more hair in the brush since starting a GLP-1 weight loss medication? You are not alone. Shedding after rapid weight loss is common, usually temporary, and a baseline scan can show whether yours is already settling.
This is general education, not medical advice, and it does not recommend, adjust or discourage any medicine. GLP-1 medications are prescription treatments. Any questions about your medication, dose or side effects belong with the doctor who prescribed it.
Why rapid weight loss triggers shedding
When the body loses weight quickly, it reads the change as a physical stress. Energy and nutrients are redirected towards essential functions, and hair follicles, which are metabolically hungry but not essential, are among the first to be put on pause. A larger than usual share of them shifts into a resting phase. It is the pace of the change, rather than the medication itself, that is most often responsible.
Telogen effluvium, explained
This pattern has a name: telogen effluvium. Hairs that shift into the resting phase do not fall straight away. They sit for around two to three months, then release as new growth pushes through beneath them. That delay is why the shedding usually starts a few months after the weight loss begins, often just as the medication seems to be working well, which makes the connection easy to miss.
Why it is usually temporary
The reassuring part is what is happening underneath. In telogen effluvium the follicles are resting, not lost, and new growth is usually already on its way behind the hairs that shed. Once weight stabilises and the body adjusts, the cycle generally rebalances over the following months. If the shedding carries on well beyond that, or density does not return the way you expected, it is worth checking whether something else, such as underlying pattern loss, is contributing.
Nutrients worth checking
Eating much less on a GLP-1 often means less protein and fewer micronutrients, and hair is one of the first places a shortfall shows. Iron, protein and zinc are the ones worth checking first. Ask your GP for a blood panel before reaching for supplements, because testing shows what actually needs correcting, and fixing a genuine deficiency removes one obstacle to recovery.
A scan shows whether it is settling or something more
A baseline scan and an honest read help distinguish temporary shedding from underlying pattern loss. The consultation is complimentary.
Book a complimentary consultationWhat we do: support and measure
Our role here is twofold. Where an assessment shows it is appropriate, treatments such as PRF or exosomes may support the scalp environment while your hair cycle rebalances. Just as importantly, we measure. An AI scalp analysis at your consultation records a precise baseline, and we review your scalp at every session, so the question of whether the shedding is settling is answered with data rather than guesswork.
