Telogen effluvium, or stress shedding

The short version
  • It is diffuse and dramatic, not patchy. Far more hair than usual in the shower, on the pillow and in the brush, from all over rather than one spot.
  • The follicles are resting, not lost. Which is why it generally recovers once the trigger settles.
  • Often the honest answer is patience. Adequate nutrition and settling the trigger do most of the work, and we will say so rather than sell you something.
  • A scan tells diffuse from pattern. That distinction is what changes the plan, and it is hard to judge in the mirror.
  • It is usually temporary. The consultation is complimentary if you want to know whether yours is settling.

If your hair suddenly started coming out in far greater amounts than usual, often a couple of months after a stressful period, an illness or a big life change, this is one of the most common and most frightening kinds of shedding there is. It has a name, telogen effluvium, and it usually settles.

What you might be noticing

Telogen effluvium tends to be diffuse and dramatic rather than patchy. You might be finding far more hair than usual in the shower, on your pillow and in your brush, and your ponytail may feel noticeably thinner. It usually affects the whole scalp fairly evenly rather than one spot, and it often begins around two to three months after the trigger, which is why the timing can feel confusing, the stressful part may already be behind you.

What the scan shows for this condition

At your consultation we use AI scalp analysis to see whether the shedding is diffuse, which fits telogen effluvium, or following a pattern, which points toward something else. The scan also gives us a baseline, so at a follow up we can see whether the shedding is settling as expected, and it helps pick up any underlying pattern hair loss that a big shed can sometimes unmask.

Which treatments are usually considered

Often the honest answer is that telogen effluvium recovers on its own, and the most useful things are patience, adequate nutrition and settling whatever triggered it. Where support would genuinely help, or where a scan suggests something more than a temporary shed, the regenerative options we offer may be considered, chosen from your scan and history.

What we would not do is push treatment on a shed that is clearly settling by itself, or promise a set result. Sometimes the most honest advice is to wait and let it recover, and we will tell you that plainly rather than sell you a course you do not need.

Honest expectations and timeframes

Telogen effluvium is usually temporary. The follicles are resting, not lost, and hair generally recovers once the trigger settles, over months rather than weeks, in line with the hair cycle. The one honest caveat is that a heavy shed can occasionally reveal underlying pattern hair loss that was already progressing, which is why a scan is the sensible way to tell the two apart.

Common questions

Stress shedding, answered

Is telogen effluvium permanent?
Usually not. It is a temporary shed where follicles are resting rather than lost, and hair generally recovers once the trigger settles, over several months.
How long until it stops?
Most people find the shedding eases within a few months of the trigger resolving, with density recovering more gradually after that. If it has not settled, an assessment is worthwhile.
Should I treat it or wait?
Often waiting, with good nutrition and settling the trigger, is the right answer. A scan helps tell a temporary shed from something worth treating, so you are not guessing.
Could it be more than stress?
It can be. Illness, childbirth, rapid weight loss, low iron and thyroid changes can all trigger the same shed, and a heavy shed can unmask pattern loss, which is why we take a history and may suggest bloods.
