Microneedling for hair growth: what it actually does

The short version
  • It is not just a delivery method. Microneedling stimulates hair growth in its own right, by prompting a natural repair response in the scalp.
  • It also opens the door. The tiny channels help active ingredients like growth factors and exosomes reach deeper into the scalp.
  • The evidence is strong when combined. Microneedling plus minoxidil consistently beats minoxidil alone in clinical trials.
  • Depth and technique matter, which is why it belongs in trained hands, not a home roller used guesswork.
  • It is part of every treatment we do, quietly doing two jobs at once.

Microneedling is one of those treatments that sounds far more dramatic than it feels. And if you have a treatment with us, it is already part of what we do, working quietly in the background to make everything else work better.

So what is actually happening when those tiny needles touch your scalp? Two useful things at once.

Job one: it wakes the scalp up

Microneedling uses a device with very fine, short needles to create tiny, controlled channels in the surface of the scalp. These are microscopic and heal quickly, but your body still notices them.

In response, your scalp switches on its natural repair and renewal process. That healing response releases its own growth signals and stimulates the dermal papilla cells, the cells at the base of each follicle that play a central role in growing hair. In other words, the controlled micro injury itself nudges your follicles toward activity.

Think of it like aerating a lawn. The small holes look like damage, but they are exactly what lets the soil breathe, absorb and grow thicker grass.

Job two: it opens the pathways

The second job is about delivery. Your skin is a very effective barrier, that is its purpose, but it also means active ingredients applied to the surface struggle to get where they are needed.

The micro channels temporarily create direct pathways into the scalp, so the good stuff we deliver, your own growth factors in PRP and PRF, or exosomes, can penetrate far deeper than they would on their own.

Two jobs at once

Stimulate, and deliver

Microneedling is valuable on its own, but it becomes far more powerful as the partner that carries active ingredients deep into the scalp.

01 · Stimulate

Triggers the repair response

Controlled micro channels switch on the scalp's natural healing, stimulating the dermal papilla cells that drive hair growth.

02 · Deliver

Opens pathways for actives

The same channels let growth factors and exosomes reach deeper into the scalp than surface application ever could.

This dual action is why microneedling pairs so naturally with regenerative treatments.

Does it actually work? What the evidence says

This is where microneedling earns its place, because the research is genuinely supportive, particularly in combination.

More growth, combined

Across multiple randomised trials and meta analyses, microneedling combined with topical minoxidil produced significantly more hair growth than minoxidil alone.

Systematic reviews and RCTs, Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology and others, 2018 to 2024.

One frequently cited trial found that adding microneedling roughly doubled the hair density improvement compared with minoxidil on its own. Researchers are honest that microneedling alone has a more limited effect, which is exactly the point: its real strength is as a partner, amplifying whatever active treatment it is paired with.

Why depth and technique matter

Not all microneedling is equal. The depth of the needles, the pattern, the pressure and the hygiene all affect both safety and results. Too shallow and it does little. Done carelessly it risks irritation or uneven treatment.

This is one of the honest reasons a home roller is not the same as clinical microneedling. In the studio it is performed to a considered depth, with sterile single use tips, as part of a planned treatment, not guesswork in the bathroom mirror.

Worth knowing

Because microneedling delivers active ingredients so effectively, we deliberately avoid numbing cream during treatment. Local anaesthetics can interfere with the very growth factors we are working to deliver, so we protect your results and manage comfort in other ways instead.

Common questions

Microneedling, answered

Can I just use a home microneedling roller instead?
Home rollers exist, but depth, sterility and technique genuinely matter for both safety and results, and home devices are usually shallow. Clinical microneedling is performed to a considered depth with sterile single use tips, as part of a planned treatment. It is not the same thing.
Does microneedling hurt?
Most people tolerate it well, describing brief prickling rather than lasting pain. We avoid numbing cream on purpose, because it can interfere with the growth factors we deliver, and we manage comfort with other methods.
Is there downtime?
Minimal. Your scalp may feel a little sensitive or look slightly pink for a short time. The main aftercare is avoiding sweat, hair products and direct sun for around 24 hours.
Do all your treatments include microneedling?
Yes. Microneedling is part of how we deliver PRP, PRF and exosome treatments, because it both stimulates the scalp and helps those active ingredients penetrate properly.
